Skewness

Geometric distribution skewness.

The skewness for a geometric random variable is

s k e w left-parenthesis upper X right-parenthesis equals StartFraction 2 minus p Over StartRoot 1 minus p EndRoot EndFraction

where p is the success probability.

Usage

var skewness = require( '@stdlib/stats/base/dists/geometric/skewness' );

skewness( p )

Returns the skewness of a geometric distribution with success probability p.

var v = skewness( 0.1 );
// returns ~2.003

v = skewness( 0.5 );
// returns ~2.121

If provided a success probability p outside of [0,1], the function returns NaN.

var v = skewness( NaN );
// returns NaN

v = skewness( 1.5 );
// returns NaN

v = skewness( -1.0 );
// returns NaN

Examples

var randu = require( '@stdlib/random/base/randu' );
var round = require( '@stdlib/math/base/special/round' );
var skewness = require( '@stdlib/stats/base/dists/geometric/skewness' );

var v;
var i;
var p;

for ( i = 0; i < 10; i++ ) {
    p = randu();
    v = skewness( p );
    console.log( 'p: %d, skew(X;p): %d', p.toFixed( 4 ), v.toFixed( 4 ) );
}

C APIs

Usage

#include "stdlib/stats/base/dists/geometric/skewness.h"

stdlib_base_dists_geometric_skewness( p )

Returns the skewness of a geometric distribution with success probability p.

double out = stdlib_base_dists_geometric_skewness( 0.5 );
// returns ~2.121

The function accepts the following arguments:

  • p: [in] double success probability.
double stdlib_base_dists_geometric_skewness( const double p );

Examples

#include "stdlib/stats/base/dists/geometric/skewness.h"
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <stdio.h>

static double random_uniform( const double min, const double max ) {
    double v = (double)rand() / ( (double)RAND_MAX + 1.0 );
    return min + ( v*(max-min) );
}

int main( void ) {
    double p;
    double y;
    int i;

    for ( i = 0; i < 25; i++ ) {
        p = random_uniform( 0.0, 1.0 );
        y = stdlib_base_dists_geometric_skewness( p );
        printf( "p: %lf, skew(X;p): %lf\n", p, y );
    }
}
